Born in Bricktown, New Jersey, Adam started skating at the age of 3. After playing several years in NJ, the McHugh family relocated to Columbus, OH where Adam continued playing. Adam attended Olentangy Orange HS and was the Ice Hockey Team’s first Varsity Captain and “pre-post” with Team Columbus.
After High School, Adam attended Ohio University and played on their D-II ACHA Club hockey team as a freshman. After OU, Adam attended Otterbein University and helped create their D-III Club Hockey program, as president, player-coach, and Captain. In just their 3rd year as a program, Otterbein reached Nationals.
Adam has coached with the Belfry Hockey Columbus/EDP from 2013 to present, with a year off in 2020-21 as the Indy Jr Fuel 317HL Director. In addition to his time with Belfry Hockey and EDP, Adam’s coaching resume includes coaching St Charles Prep HS (an assistant Varsity Coach) from 2013-16, head JV Coach with the Olentangy Orange, and a skills coach with Battery Hockey Academy.
During the off-season, Adam has been the Director of Defensive Camps for Mitch Korn (NHL New York Islanders Goalie Director). Adam has held this position since 2016. He has worked as a director and coached at Miami University’s Summer Hockey Camp since 2010-18.
Adam currently resides in Columbus, where he returned in the summer of 2021, to again coach with the Elite Development Program (as our lead U10 Squirt instructor) and join the Columbus Academy Varsity High School Hockey Team as its head coach.
